Adding fractions is pretty easy overall. You just need to add the numerator if the denominator is the same. In the next lesson, I will talk about adding fractions with unlike denominators. Fractions are just ratios where they are expressing something divided by something else, or how many divisions of a number there are.

To add fractions, the first step is to check if the denominator is the same, if it's not, look at my other article to find out how to do that addition. An example is 2/8 + 3/8. The answer would be 5/8 because 2 + 3 = 5. Since the denominator of both numbers is eight, the numerators can be added simply. Let's try another example. 5/15 + 4/15. 5 + 4 = 9, so the answer would be 9/15. You can also simplify that to be 3/5.
If the numerator exceeds the denominator when the addition is taking place or even when the numbers have not been added yet, you will get an improper fraction. You can either leave it as an improper fraction or turn it into a mixed fraction depending on what your assignment says to do. Here is an example: 13/15 + 11/15. 13 + 11 = 24 so the answer would be 24/15, or 1 and 9/15. Another example would be 5/4+10/4. The answer would be 15/4, or 3 and 3/4 because 5 + 10 = 15.
