Adding big numbers is just like adding small numbers. You just have to add them repeatedly and sometimes do a "carry", which means that if you reach a two-digit number, you have to give it over to the next place value to the left. In this article, I will teach you how to add big numbers and how to carry when you are adding.

To add larger numbers, such as two digit numbers, put one number on top and one number under it, then put a line below and a plus sign. The bigger number is usually on top, but it doesn't really matter which number is on top in addition, since something plus another thing is the same thing as that other thing plus the something. When you are done setting up you addition, it should look something like this:
You will then add the digits in the ones place. In this example, 7 + 4 = 11, so you will put an eleven under those numbers, but wait! 11 is a two-digit number, so you will have to use a trick called carrying. Only put the digit in the ones place of the number you got when adding the first two numbers. In this case, the one is in the ones place in eleven, so put a one down and move the other 1 up to "carry" it.
Now, when you add the 5 and 3 next, make sure to also include the one in the addition. The reason why we do this is because the one is actually a 10. You just don't see the zero. If there is a one in the tens place, it is a 10. So, like I was saying, add the 5, 3, and 1, which will give you 9. Put it under. Keep in mind that if when you add it, the number is 10 or greater, you don't have to carry again. Just put the number on the left.
