Algebraic expressions are among the most simple concepts in algebra. You will encounter them not only in every future math class you take, but also in the real world. They can be found in ordinary tasks and activities, such as shopping and cooking.
An expression is a combination of variables and numbers joined by operations. A variable is a letter that stands in the place of a number, meaning it represents a number, but its value is not given. The most commonly used variable in most areas of algebra is x. An example of an expression using the variable x is x + 3. There are two basic types of expressions, which are monimials and polynomials. Monomials only contain one term, for example, 2x, y, or 5. Polynomials contain multiple terms, for example, x + 1, 2x² - 8x + 4, or y + x - 2.
Each term of an expression can be classified as either a variable or a constant. While a variable is a letter that represents an unknown value, a constant is simply a number with a known value. In addition to constants, coefficients are also numbers with known values, though they are multiplied directly with a variable. For example, in the expression 4x + 2, 4 is the coefficient of x, and 2 is a constant.
